Year 10 careers education

Students in Year 10 will be given 40 hours of instructed career education at Parkes High School as well as additional opportunities for career development. This will comprise of classroom lessons and excursions involving the exploration of the world of work. Students will be given the opportunity to undertake work placement through the Year 10 work experience program.

All students will be required to produce a careers portfolio as well as complete other aspects involved in an application process. Students will have the opportunity to take part in various school-to-work activities which are designed to address the issues involved in making a more successful transition from secondary school into the workforce. All students in Year 10 will complete career plans and be involved in a mentor program with staff from the school.

The career module outcomes include:

1. Learning about self in relation to work

  • critically evaluate personal qualities and physical attributes as they apply to career choice and the requirements of the workplace
  • analyse the key factors influencing the career values, aspirations andachievements of individuals and groups.

2. Learning about the world of work

  • analyse the place and meaning of work in the life of individuals and communities
  • identify occupational pathways and their related educational, training and skill requirements
  • describe cultural and structural features of the world of work
  • describe features of the labour market including emerging trends and the impact of change.

3. Learning to make career plans and pathway decisions

  • recognise the ongoing nature of career path planning
  • use appropriate strategies for career decision-making and career-planning
  • locate and use a range of career-planning support materials and services.

4. Learning the skills required to implement career decisions and manage work/study transitions

  • demonstrate the application and interview skills required for entry into employment.

And post-secondary education and training course

  • discuss the lifestyle changes and personal adjustments involved in the transition from school to post-school employment and further education.
